1 Environment, Mankind, and Technical Development

A far reaching line will be drawn that includes earth‘s structure and the biosphere in particular, but also biological evolution and the species homo sapiens. This leads to a discussion of technical development with the associated exponential growth functions. Other major points of the course are the maintenance of the knowledge, heritage, and problems of prognosis.

2 Sampling Soils, Groundwaters, and Soil Gases

The course provides the necessary basics for environmental rules & regulations and devises a sampling plan and strategy. This is followed by sampling methods for soils, groundwaters, and soil gases. Then, sampling sizes, sampling procedures, and sampling protocol are discussed, including further handling/ treatment of the respective sample and uncertainties implicit in the sampling.

3 Quality Management

The course comprises of various aspects pertaining to environmental quality management. However, special emphasis is placed on environmental problems associated with mining activities. Different management systems are presented in relation to the quality handbook, proceedings are defined, and quality acts are discussed. Successively, the way is illustrated, in which quality assessments are legally documented. This is followed by a discussion on how quality management can be improved.
